Bonjour Startup Montréal and the Mouvement des accélérateurs d’innovation du Québec submitted a brief on May 15 as part of the Ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation’s consultation on the Quebec Research and Innovation Strategy (SQRI). This brief is based on the idea that the growth of startups is a guarantee of continued economic prosperity for Quebec as long as the startup ecosystem is considered a specific subset requiring initiatives adapted to its potential and its own logic.

In this brief, five challenges are highlighted that currently limit the growth of startups in Quebec. They pertain to: commercialization, talent attraction, the journey of the startup (support and funding), links with large corporations and exchanges between Quebec regions. From these challenges, five sets of solutions are described to make the development of the Montreal startup ecosystem, as well as the whole Quebec ecosystem, a priority for the province.

Finally, three projects are prioritized since they can be put into action quickly. These projects could increase the efficiency, agility and performance of the startup ecosystem:

  1. an optimal support program throughout the startup’s journey;
  2. the creation of a world-class startup hub bringing together startups with high-growth potential (scale-ups) as well as a range of services, organizations and key actors;
  3. a scaleup platform to support high-performing startups, offering them services to considerably increase their international exposure.

The brief also includes contributions from key actors in the Quebec startup ecosystem such as Axelys, Montreal International, Réseau Capital, IVADO, Polytechnique Montreal as well as the Montreal accelerators Centech, Cycle Momentum, Esplanade Quebec, La Piscine, MT Lab and Zú.
