Discover the 36 Laureates 2020-2021 and what they reveal about Montréal’s ecosystem
by Startup Montréal 19 January 2021
In the new version of Grant+, Montréal inc. welcomes 36 new Laureates who are joining the big business family that was born 25 years ago. These 36 young companies get access to customized services including support from volunteer coaches, and direct access to the business community. Furthermore, they get the opportunity to double their initial financing of $10,000 if they manage to meet their business objectives in the course of the next months.
New emerging sectors
We consider that these Laureates form a mini-version of the Montréal startup ecosystem and reveal new trends that emerge in sectors such as MedTech and AgriTech. Artificial intelligence, for which Montréal is famous, is now an integral part of the business models of several companies. It is at the heart of the value proposition of half of the companies selected, in industries as diverse as life sciences, food industry and video games. The pandemic has also had an impact on the projects with 25% of companies selected working in the field of life sciences.
A more experienced cohort
For the first time this year, the age requirement has been removed to be more inclusive. This change had an impact on the selection since a third of the 36 companies selected are founded by at least one entrepreneur aged 35 and over. These figures reveal a general tendency for entrepreneurs to get trained and educated for longer (studies, research, professional experience) before launching a business.
Furthermore, with one exception, all Laureates are aware of the opportunities provided by support organizations (accelerators, incubators) such as Centech, District 3 and Next AI Montréal (see the full list below). They understand the added value of networking, connections and support from various organizations that make Montréal’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
These companies are the face of Montréal and will represent us during virtual events or, as we hope, physical events.
